Retractable Fly Screens for Windows - FAQ
-
What types of windows are retractable screens best suited for?
Retractable screens are the ideal solution for windows where a fixed screen is impractical. They are most commonly used for Awning windows, Casement windows, and Double-hung windows, as well as Servery windows leading to outdoor entertaining areas.
-
Can I install these screens on windows with existing winders or handles?
Yes. Our systems are designed to sit inside the window reveal or on the face of the architrave, providing enough clearance for standard chain winders and latch handles. This allows you to open your window fully before pulling the screen into place.
-
Do you offer vertical or horizontal retraction for windows?
We provide both. For most standard windows, a vertical (pull-down) system is preferred. However, for wider windows or servery-style openings, a horizontal (side-pull) retraction may be more ergonomic and easier to operate.
-
Will the screen block my view or darken the room?
Not at all. We use a high-transparency, charcoal-tinted mesh that is designed to be virtually invisible from a distance. When retracted, the mesh is completely hidden in the slim aluminum cassette, allowing 100% of the natural light and view to enter your home.
-
How do retractable screens handle the high winds common in coastal Australian areas?
Our window screens feature brush-lined tracks or "zip" technology that keeps the mesh securely tensioned within the side guides. This prevents the mesh from blowing out of the tracks during a typical sea breeze or gusty conditions.
-
Can I match the screen frame to my window's Colorbond color?
Definitely. To ensure a seamless look, our aluminum housings are available in popular Australian shades like Monument, Surfmist, and Classic Cream, as well as clear anodized finishes. We can also custom powder-coat to match any specific Dulux or Interpon color.
-
Is the mesh UV-resistant?
Yes. All our screens utilize UV-stabilized mesh specifically engineered for the harsh Australian sun. This prevents the material from becoming brittle or fading over time, even when installed on North-facing windows.
-
How easy are they to operate for children or the elderly?
Our vertical window screens are equipped with a controlled rate of retraction. This means when you release the screen, it glides back up smoothly and safely rather than snapping shut, making it very user-friendly for all ages.
-
What is the maximum size available for a single window screen?
For vertical pull-down screens, we can typically cover widths up to 2.4 meters. For extra-wide windows, we recommend a side-retracting system or a multi-cassette configuration to ensure the mesh remains taut and easy to handle.
-
Are these screens effective against tiny insects like "Midges" or "Sandflies"?
Yes. We offer a high-density "Midge Mesh" option. This weave is much tighter than standard fly screen mesh, specifically designed to block the tiny biting insects common in Queensland and coastal NSW while still allowing for airflow.
-
How do I clean the screen if it gets dusty?
Maintenance is very low. Because the mesh stays protected inside the cassette when not in use, it stays clean longer. If it does get dusty, simply extend the screen and use a soft vacuum brush attachment or wipe gently with a damp microfiber cloth.
-
Can I install these myself or do I need a builder?
Our window screens are designed as DIY-friendly kits that come pre-cut to your measurements. If you can use a cordless drill and a level, you can install our screens! However, for complex or high-reach windows, we can recommend professional installers.
-
Do your screens work with Kitchen Servery windows opening to the deck?
Absolutely! This is one of our most popular applications. We recommend our horizontal side-pull system for servery windows. It allows you to open the screen just as much as you need to pass drinks or food through to the outdoor entertaining area, then slide it shut instantly to keep flies out of your kitchen.
-
My windows have Chain Winders at the bottom. Will the screen interfere with them?
Not at all. We’ve engineered our window screens with the typical Australian chain winder (Whitco/Interlock style) in mind. Our slimline tracks are installed with enough offset or "build-out" to ensure the screen glides perfectly past the winder handle without snagging or requiring you to remove your existing hardware.
-
Can I install a retractable screen on a Gas Strut Servery window?
Yes. Gas strut windows (which flip upward) are a stunning feature in modern Australian homes. Our pull-down (vertical) retractable screens are the perfect partner for these; they mount discreetly at the top of the frame, allowing you to enjoy the wide-open counter space when the window is up while maintaining a 100% insect-proof barrier.
-
Will the bottom track of the screen get in the way of my kitchen stone benchtop?
We offer a low-profile bottom guide specifically for servery applications. It is designed to be unobtrusive and easy to clean, ensuring it doesn't trap crumbs or interfere with the sleek look of your Caesarstone or timber benchtop where it meets the window frame.
-
Is it possible to have a "Stop-Anywhere" feature for my kitchen window?
Yes, our specialized pleated or tensioned systems allow the screen to remain in any position you leave it. This is incredibly handy for serveries, as you can leave the screen 30% open to pass small items through without the mesh fully retracting back into the housing.
-
What happens if the screen gets splashed with water or grease from the kitchen?
Since our frames are powder-coated architectural aluminum, they are highly resistant to the occasional kitchen splash. The mesh is also non-absorbent. We recommend a quick wipe with a damp cloth and mild soapy water to keep your servery screen looking pristine and hygienic for food preparation areas.
