Retractable Fly Screens for Doors - FAQ
-
What is a retractable fly screen and how does it work?
A retractable fly screen features a high-quality mesh that rolls into a slim aluminum housing when not in use. When you need insect protection, you simply pull the handle across (or down); the mesh stays in place via a track system, and when released, it retracts smoothly back into its cassette, keeping your views unobstructed.
-
Can these screens be installed on different types of Australian doors?
Absolutely. Our screens are highly versatile and designed for the Australian lifestyle. They can be fitted to single doors, French doors, sliding doors, stacker doors, and even wide bifold doors.
-
Is the installation DIY-friendly or do I need a professional?
We offer both options. Our DIY kits come with step-by-step guides and are designed for easy home installation. However, if you prefer a seamless finish without the effort, we also provide professional installation services across many parts of Australia.
-
How much frame depth is required for installation?
For a standard recessed (inside mount) installation, you typically need at least 35mm of unobstructed depth within your door frame to house the cassette and tracks. If your frame is shallower, a "face-fit" (outside mount) onto the architrave is also possible.
-
Are the screens durable enough for the Australian climate?
Yes. Our frames are made from premium architectural-grade aluminum which is powder-coated to prevent rusting and fading. The mesh is typically UV-stabilized fiberglass or specialized PE+PP, designed to withstand the harsh Australian sun and coastal salt air.
-
What is the maximum width a retractable screen can cover?
For large openings like bifold or stacker doors, we recommend a double-door configuration. This allows two screens to meet in the middle, effectively doubling the span. We can often cover openings up to 4–6 meters wide depending on the specific model.
-
Can the screen stay open at any position?
Many of our advanced models feature a "stop-anywhere" tensioning system (common in pleated or high-end roller versions), allowing you to leave the screen partially open for pets or quick access without it snapping back.
-
Will the bottom track be a tripping hazard?
Our tracks are designed with a low-profile aesthetic. Many of our door systems use a very slim bottom guide (sometimes as low as 3mm–5mm) to ensure a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor areas, making them wheelchair and toddler-friendly.
-
How do I maintain and clean my retractable fly screen?
Maintenance is simple. Regularly vacuum the tracks to remove debris and wipe the aluminum frame with a damp cloth and mild detergent. For the mesh, a soft brush or a light spray with water (if outdoors) will keep it looking new. Avoid using silicon-based sprays unless specified.
-
Are these screens pet-friendly?
While retractable screens are excellent for keeping insects out, they are not "security screens." If you have large, active pets that might run into the mesh, we recommend our pleated mesh versions, as they are more visible to animals and more resilient to minor impacts than traditional flat mesh.
-
What color options are available to match my home?
We offer a range of standard powder-coated colors (such as Pearl White, Black, Surfmist, and Monument) to match common Australian door brands. Custom Dulux or Interpon colors are often available upon request.
-
What kind of warranty do you provide?
We stand by our quality. Typically, our DIY products come with a 3-year warranty, while our professional installations may include a 1-year labor warranty in addition to the structural warranty on the aluminum frame and components.
-
Do you have solutions for extra-wide Bifold or Stacker doors?
Yes, these are our specialty. For wide openings common in modern Australian homes, we use a double-symmetrical system where two screens meet in the center using a magnetic seal. This can cover massive spans (up to 6+ meters) without the need for unsightly vertical pillars, maintaining your seamless indoor-outdoor flow.
-
Can I match the screen frame to my existing Colorbond windows?
Absolutely. We offer our aluminum tracks and cassettes in Australia’s most popular Colorbond colors, including Monument, Surfmist, Anthracite, and Woodland Grey. Our high-quality powder coating ensures the screen looks like an original part of your door suite rather than a secondary add-on.
-
How do the screens perform under the harsh Australian sun?
Our mesh is UV-stabilized, meaning it is chemically treated to resist the "brittleness" caused by extreme UV exposure. The aluminum housing also protects the mesh from the sun when it’s retracted, significantly extending the lifespan of the product compared to fixed screens.
-
I live in a Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rated zone. Are these screens suitable?
While retractable fly screens are primarily designed for insect protection and not as a primary bushfire barrier, our frames are made from non-combustible architectural-grade aluminum. We can also offer specialized mesh options that meet specific BAL requirements for certain council regulations—please contact us for a technical data sheet.
-
Is the mesh visible enough to prevent people from walking into it?
This is a common concern with large Bifold openings. Our Pleated Mesh options are more visible to the eye, which helps prevent children or guests from accidentally walking through them. For our flat mesh systems, the high-quality weave offers 100% insect protection while remaining nearly invisible to preserve your view.
-
How do these screens handle the coastal "Salt Air" in regions like the Gold Coast or Sydney?
Our aluminum components undergo a rigorous pre-treatment and powder-coating process specifically designed to resist corrosion. If you live within 5km of the ocean, we recommend a simple monthly rinse of the tracks and housing with fresh water to prevent salt crystallization.
-
Will a retractable screen affect the warranty of my expensive new Stacker doors?
No. Our installation methods (both face-fit and reveal-fit) are non-invasive to the core structural integrity of your door system. We work with many leading Australian door manufacturers to ensure our screens complement their hardware without interference.
-
Why choose aluminum over PVC or timber-look alternatives?
In the Australian climate, PVC can warp and timber requires constant oiling. Aluminum alloy is the "gold standard" because it provides the best strength-to-weight ratio, ensuring that even at a 3-meter height, the tracks remain perfectly straight and the operation stays smooth for years.
